Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging, also known as ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining medical images using high-frequency sound waves. There are no x-rays involved in ultrasound imaging. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. Since ultrasound images are captured as real time images, they are able to demonstrate movement of internal tissues and organs. This enables the visualization of blood flow and heart valve functions for example. Also, this can help to diagnose a variety of heart conditions and to assess damage after a heart attack or other illness. However, Ultrasound has difficulty penetrating bone and can only see the outer surface of bony structures. For visualization of bone, other imaging modalities are preferred.

Essentially, Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body’s internal organs, including but not limited to the following:

  • blood vessels
  • fetus
  • gallbladder
  • heart
  • kidneys
  • liver
  • musculoskeletal structures
  • pancreas
  • spleen
  • thyroid
  • urinary bladder
  • uterus and ovaries

Our experienced sonographers are registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The ARDMS has certified more than 55,000 individuals and is the globally recognized standard of excellence in sonography.

MIMA Radiology utilizes the Philips iU22 ultrasound system at our Sheridan, Viera and Malabar locations. This system has been recognized for providing medical images with high resolution and fine detail. This equipment represents state-of-the-art imaging equipment and is used by medical centers across the country. In keeping with our mission of delivering comprehensive care, our Ultrasound department sought to increase productivity and improve efficiencies in performing patient exams. The features on the Philips iU22 system, including the “Philips’ Protocols,” help us meet our objectives in terms of delivering comprehensive, quality medical care. This equipment has also enabled us to reduce ultrasound exam times by 30-50%.

Exams Performed (but not limited to):
  • Abdomen (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen)
  • Kidneys, bladder
  • Thyroid
  • Pelvis /Gyn (uterus & ovaries)
  • Scrotum

MIMA Radiology Offers ACR Accredited Ultrasound Services
The Ultrasound department at the Sheridan location is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in general and gynecological ultrasound. The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice.
